ECHL: Finally a winning streak for the Trois-Rivières lions

For the first time in 2023, the Trois-Rivières Lions have won two games in a row. They defeated the Norfolk Admirals for the second time in 24 hours, winning 3-2 at Norfolk Scope on Saturday.

Marc-André Bergeron’s men relied on a Joe Vrbetic in great form to triumph. The young goaltender, a former Montreal Canadiens seven-round pick, saved 28 pucks in the win. The day before he had failed four times in the 7: 4 success with only 18 shots.

Ryan Francis offered victory to the Trois-Rivières formation by breaking the deadlock midway through the third third. He scored his 11th goal of the season and threaded the needle with a snappy wrist shot.

In his sixth game with the Lions and his 16th game in the ECHL, Chad Pietroniro scored the first goal of his career in the professional ranks. The Arizona native, a former Quebec Major Junior Hockey League player, had plenty of time to open the scoring in a three-on-two run.

After a reply from Quebec striker Mathieu Roy ー his first of two goals in the game ー, Francis Thibeault put the visitors ahead in the second period. His powerful slap shot from the point surprised goalkeeper Cale Morris.

Like its big brother, the Laval Rocket, the Lions are entitled to six days off before resuming the collar. They will visit Maine to face the Mariners three times starting Friday.
