Earthquake on the border between Turkey and Iran

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake in northwest Iran has killed at least two people and injured hundreds. The information was released by the state news agency IRNA on Sunday night. Consequently, numerous buildings in dozens of locations were damaged. At least 440 people were injured. The city of Khoy in the province of West Azerbaijan was particularly hard hit. The earthquake was also felt across the region.

According to the Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam, the earthquake occurred at night around 21:44 (local time) in the region bordering Turkey at a depth of 10 kilometers. According to state media, rescue teams heading to the area and hospitals were put on alert. Just on Wednesday, a week ago, the earth shook in northwest Iran. At least 120 people were injured.
