Eagles 2022 Training Camp Practice Notes, Day 9: Injuries are piling up

Day 9 of Philadelphia Eagles 2022 training camp is in the books and it has been the hottest of the summer so far. These notes are typed out of love while sitting in a puddle of my own sweat.

• Let’s start with the injuries today because they are piling up. The guys who didn’t train today (in alphabetical order):

  • Grant Calcaterra – hamstring
  • Le’Raven Clark – hamstring
  • Kenneth Gainwell – Hips
  • John Hightower – Strip
  • Jason Kelce – elbows
  • Jimmy Moreland – ankle
  • Boston Scott – concussion
  • De Vonta Smith – Strip
  • Jaquiski Tart – personal reasons
  • Karen Vincent – Strip
  • Gregory Ward – toe
  • Keric Wheatfall – hamstring
  • Kelce has a “routine cleaning” of his elbow, aka scope aka surgery, according to the team. They didn’t provide a recovery schedule, but it should be ready for week 1.

And the two guys who were limited:

  • Andre Dillard – concussion
  • Jordan Mailata – concussion
  • My feeling is that, barring any of the above injuries, Kelce will not be missing any of these players for any significant time. It certainly wouldn’t make sense to have De Vonta Smith practice until he’s back to 100 percent.

The good news is that Dillard and Mailata have returned to practice.

    • If the Eagles training camp is an indication, AJ Brown will reach eleventy billion goals this season. If Brown has been on the field for the past five or so practices and it’s a passing game, you can count on it Jalen hurts goes his way. I suppose Brown’s strong target percentage lately in practice is partly due to the absence of Smith, who has missed the last four practice sessions. This is also worth mentioning Zach Pascal missed time earlier in camp, and Quez Watkins missed parts of the practice.

Still, it’s very clear that Hurts trusts Brown. It remains to be determined if Hurts will make a concerted effort to get Smith his share of goals when he returns to the lineup.

    • There really isn’t much to say about Hurts today other than throwing a lot at Brown. There was a lot of running play and situational work, but he only attempted a dozen or so passes.

#Hurts verdict: Solid day – no wow throws, but no bad results either. Inventory neutral 😐

Gardner Minshew had a rough day, and in my opinion he had an alarming camp. He was intercepted twice in 7-on-7’s, once by DavidTaylor after a nice pass break by K’Von Wallace. Shortly thereafter, Josiah Scott picked up Minshew. It will be interesting to see how much Minshew plays in the Eagles’ first preseason game this Friday against the Jets. The assumption here is that Nick Sirianni will give him a lot of work and hope he will be able to handle some of his struggles.

    • Pascal had a really nice catch in today’s 7v7. He was in a full sprint coming across the field, and hurts took him a hair too far. Pascal reached out and plucked it out of the air. Impressive catch. We’re just getting our first look at Pascal after he was absent for over a week with food poisoning.

    • We mentioned above that the Eagles worked on some situational things today. For example, they ran a few games trying to get a first down and then immediately get into the limits to keep the clock ticking. Not surprising, Miles Sanders was in some of these plays.

If you recall, on the Eagles’ final drive in Carolina last season, the Eagles had four big runs to tick off the clock and seal the game. Sanders made this ride harder than necessary as he ran out of bounds TWICE lol. It seems Sirianni made sure to work on this situation this summer so something like this doesn’t happen again.

    • I know I’ve mentioned it a lot in my practice notes so far, but Brandon Graham keep playing games. He blew up a running game for a TFL, and he also had a sack in team practices. He doesn’t have an off switch.

    • I think the undrafted offensive lineman is something to watch for in the future Josh Sills. At college at West Virginia and Oklahoma State, Sills started at all five positions along the line. The Eagles love versatility and have played sills in a number of places. He has almost no chance of making the initial 53-man roster but look for him to develop on the practice team.

The Eagles have had success over time developing such unconscripted types as e.g Nat Herbig and Sua Opetafor example.

    • I kept an eye out JJ Arcega-Whiteside Today just out of curiosity. He built up to around 240 pounds to play tight end this season. JJAW would never be mistaken Tyreek Hill primarily, but he doesn’t seem to be moving as well as he did in his first few seasons in Philly. I would call it a deep longshot to make the roster at this point.

    • Throughout training camp, I will occasionally do one-on-one interviews with other Eagles beat writers while the players stretch and do other boring stuff. Today I chatted with Reuben Frank. Oh, and here’s the iTunes link. Rate, subscribe, etc.

In these beat author interviews, I ask each author four different questions:

  • What will the Eagles’ tally look like in 2022?
  • Can they make the playoffs?
  • If so, will they win playoff games?
  • Will Jalen Hurts be the starting quarterback in 2023?
  • The predictions so far:
