Dominica Government Delivers 18 Climate Resilient Homes

ROSEAU, Jan. 18 (Prensa Latina) Dominica Premier Roosevelt Skerrit donated 18 climate-resilient homes to families affected by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, Caribbean News Now reported today.

The housing units built under the 11th State Redevelopment Contract are intended to reduce the vulnerability of the Kalinagro area, a government statement said.

Indeed, Skerrit said it is part of a deliberate policy to improve the quality of life and mitigate the impact of bad weather on life and property.

The keys we hand represent comfort and belonging, promising a brighter future; a brighter future for each of you and your families, he said.

Another 50 homes will be built as part of the same project in Concord, St Cyr, Mahaut River and Gaulette River, the text added.

Dominica does better to rebuild to become the world’s first climate-resilient country, which is why the government launched the Housing Initiative, which includes those affected by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015.

In addition, it promotes two thousand homes funded entirely by the Island’s Citizenship Through Investment (CBI), some of which were granted months ago.

The main development company, MMC Development Ltd., proposed a standard design where the houses and apartments are a mix of two and three bedroom types with a toilet and bath, living room, dining room and kitchen.

Each unit is built with reinforced concrete, stormproof windows and fortified with retaining walls and sewer and storm drains.

Located in the Lesser Antilles, the Caribbean state with almost 72,000 inhabitants also manufactures health and education centers as well as weather-resistant buildings.
