Dolly Parton made a rare comment about her longtime marriage to Carl Thomas Dean as she reflected on their longtime love after first meeting when she was just 18. Speaking about her 56-year marriage, which she chose to stay out of In the Spotlight, the 76-year-old singer gushed that they are very “different people.”
“He’s kind of a loner, so he doesn’t really like being with anyone but me when I’m home — I mean, he’s not someone who goes out there and socializes that much,” she told Entertainment Today Evening. She continued, “He loves living on the farm, looking after the property as he has for all these many years, and then we just have a lot to talk about.”
The global icon described her spouse, who she met at a Nashville laundromat when she was 23, as her “world.” “We work really well together,” enthused Parton. “We have a lot of love and respect for each other, and I think the key to it all — we both have crazy, warped senses of humor, so we have a lot of fun.” The Jolene hitmaker continued to marvel at the length of their relationship, which is expanding spanning nearly six decades.
“We’ve actually been married for 56 years, but we’ve been together for 58 years,” she noted. “That’s a long time to do anything. It’s nice to be married in this business. Previously, the performer said her secret to staying together for so long was that they “made a rule years ago” that they would “never fight.”
“Once you start doing it, it can become a habit and it just keeps going,” she told Hollywood Life. “So if there are times when things get a little tense or we get a little sideways here and there, we just walk away and come back later and have a joke,” Parton continued. At the time, she said they were “good friends” and “very compatible” in many ways, including the fact that “the temperature in the house is the same.”
