Lili was reunited with her family thanks to the help of the shelter

Earlier this week, employees at McKamey Animal Center in Tennessee took into their care an adorable dog named Lilo. She was walked through the streets alone last Tuesday (24) and taken to the shelter.

What seemed like another case of abandonment soon turned out to be not so easy after all. Lilo wore a collar with a note attached. Handwritten by Lilo’s tutor was a heartbreaking message.

“My name is Lilo. please love me My mother cannot stay with me and is homeless with 2 children. She has tried her best but cannot get any help. I cost her a lot. She really loves me and I’m an amazing dog and I love to be loved. Please don’t insult me.”

Luckily, Lilo’s paths crossed with nice people, and the shelter staff wasn’t just concerned about the dog’s wellbeing. Moved by the letter, they posted a response on social media:

“We are very sorry that you have made the decision to leave her. We know that many people are struggling to take care of their pets these days. We know how difficult it must be to give up an animal you so obviously loved because you can’t provide it with the care it needs. We understand,” the shelter wrote.

“We want you to know that she is safe and we will take care of her as best we can. She will be loved by our staff and volunteers, we will keep her name and promise we will do our best to find her a wonderful new home. But if you’re reading this, we hope you’ll step up to get her back. We will help you with everything you need to take care of them as best as possible. Lilo definitely misses you and we would love nothing more than to see her return to her beloved family. Anyhow, please know that we understand that we will not judge and that we are here to help you in any way we can.”

A day after the release, Lilo’s tutor was tracked down and invited to meet the dog she loved so much. Thanking the followers who shared the post, the shelter team said they were working to get Lilo’s family back on their feet and appealed to anyone who could help to help those in need.

“Abandoning an animal is a crime, but more importantly, it should never be an option,” the shelter wrote.

The shelter urges people who are struggling to seek help from local animal shelters before abandoning their pets, as they may be able to offer better help.
