The family has rallied around the Die Hard actor after he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) – an unusual form of dementia that causes deterioration in behavior, personality and speech.
They publicly revealed his condition in February this year and his wife Emma Heming recently gave a heartbreaking update about his ongoing battle with dementia.

She was dressed in an oversized black blazer, which she wore with jeans and a pair of boots.
During his outing in LA, Bruce wore a dark blue puffer jacket and a matching dark blue hat. The actor sat with his passenger window rolled down as he was driven around his hometown in what has become an increasingly rare public outing given his ongoing health struggles.
Emma fought back tears as she spoke in an interview on the Today show about how she and her two daughters are coping with the “heartache and sadness” that has come with the actor’s deteriorating health.
“What I’m learning is that dementia is hard,” she said during an appearance at the show’s New York studio. “It’s hard for the person diagnosed.” It’s also hard for the family. And it’s no different for Bruce, me or our girls.
“And when they say it’s a family disease, it really is.”
When asked how she went about explaining his illness to her children, she said: “I think it’s always been that way… we’re a very honest and open household.”
“And the most important thing for us was to be able to say what the disease was and explain what it is, because if you know what the disease is from a medical perspective, it all kind of makes sense.”
“That’s why it was important that we let her know what it is because I don’t want there to be any stigma or shame associated with her father’s diagnosis or any form of dementia.”

When asked by host Hoda Kotb if he knew what was happening to him, Emma paused and revealed, “Hard to know.”
But despite the difficulties of caring for her husband, she said the diagnosis had made life “easier”.
“I think it was the blessing and the curse.” You know, to finally understand what happened so I can accept what is.
“It doesn’t make it any less painful, but just accepting and knowing what’s happening to Bruce makes it a little bit easier.”
“There are so many beautiful things happening in our lives.” “It’s just really important for me to look up from the grief and sadness so I can see what’s happening around us,” Emma added.
In a particularly touching moment, Hoda asked Emma what she thinks Bruce is teaching her girls as they all cope with his illness as a family.
“Honestly, he’s the gift that keeps on giving. Love, patience, resilience, so much…” Emma said.
“And he teaches me and our whole… I mean, you know, it’s not my comfort zone for me to be out here and do that, but that’s the power of Bruce.”

Hoda continued, “I’ve heard of people who have a sick family member, and I remember this from a friend…she said, ‘My husband’s diagnosis has made my children better people.'” Is that what you stands out?’
“That’s what strikes me,” Emma replied. “Look, I think my kids would definitely be great!” And that’s not what I would want for them. But really, like I said, it teaches them so much and how to care and love, and that’s a beautiful thing in the midst of sadness.”
She confirmed that she refers to herself as Bruce’s “care partner” rather than his “caregiver,” and also noted the importance of taking care of yourself as well.
“It’s so important to ask for help and support.” And you can reach out to organizations like the AFTD or Hilarity For Charity…that’s kind of a good place to start.
“And it is important that care partners take care of themselves so they can be the best care and partner to the person they are caring for,” she added.
