Demi Lovato shared new insights into her latest single, 29, which is said to be about the age difference between her and ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama.
“I’d be lying if I said I’m not too afraid to release this song,” Heart Attack hitmaker Zane Lowe, 29, said in an interview with Apple Music on Wednesday.
“I just said, ‘I have to go through with this. I have to stand by my truth,” she explained, adding, “I’m very careful about the way I answer these questions because I feel like the song says it all.’

Lovato — who recently explained that she now uses them/their pronouns in addition to them more than a year after coming out as nonbinary — also explained that “sometimes saying less is more.”
She also told Lowe that she’s found a new “perspective” after recently turning 29 herself.
“Turning 29 was a huge eye opener for me. And then going into treatment and having insights led to my transformation, my release from the emotion that was in that song.’

The anxious track from her forthcoming eighth studio album Holy Fvck is widely believed to be about the 42-year-old actress, based on the insightful lyrics written from her perspective at the age they first met when she was just a teenager.
The couple were together from 2010 to 2016. The singer began dating the actor when she was 18, California’s age of consent, and he was 29, but first met when she was 17.

In another verse, the performer, who decided to get fully sober in late 2021, notes that she was “too young to drink wine” when they first started dating.
“Just five years of bleeders, students and teachers / Far from innocent / What the hell is consent? /Numbers told you not to, /but that didn’t stop you,” the Grammy nominee sang.
Holy Fvck is scheduled for release on August 19th.
During a 2020 interview with Harper’s Bazaar after getting engaged to Amanda Pacheco, Demi explained they were “not in each other’s lives” and “haven’t spoken in a long time.”
New perspective: She also told Lowe that she’s found a new “perspective” after recently turning 29 herself, saying: “Turning 29 was a huge eye-opener for me.”
While addressing their split, Lovato said, “I think I needed this because I had to learn to be okay on my own. When you start a relationship with someone at such a young age and then spend six years with someone, you don’t really learn anything about yourself.”
After her near-fatal drug overdose in July 2018, a source told TMZ that Valderrama “was a crutch for Demi through her hospitalization and also visited her in rehab.”
In her 2017 documentary, Just Complicated, the Disney Channel alumna opened up about meeting the actor at his home in January 2010.
‘[When] I saw him for the first time, I was wearing hair and makeup and he came in and sat down and I said, “I love this man” and “I have to have him,” she recalled. “But I was only 17, so he said, ‘Get away from me.’
