Death toll in Gaza exceeds 20,000

The death toll in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 20,000 during the conflict between Israel and the fundamentalist group Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave.

According to the local health ministry, Israeli attacks since October 7 have already claimed 20,057 victims, mostly children and women, and 53,320 injured.

The current conflict was sparked after unprecedented terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians.

This week, the UN Security Council tried to vote on a resolution calling for a new ceasefire that would allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, but without success.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda ThomasGreenfield said the country was ready to support a text drawn up last Thursday (21) with Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, but there was no agreement between all members.

According to the AFP agency, the proposed resolution calls for “urgent measures to immediately enable safe and unhindered humanitarian access and to create the conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities,” but there is no longer any talk of a ceasefire.

Hamas has also said it will only accept a new deal to release hostages if there is a ceasefire. The group has already rejected a proposal for a weeklong ceasefire in return for the release of 40 kidnapped people, but Israel is now considering doubling the period during which the conflict will be suspended, according to local press.
