Young Thomas Audet, who died in 2016 from a blow to his abdomen in nebulous circumstances, should have received priority treatment from the Directorate for the Protection of Young Persons (DPJ), says a coroner, who recommends setting up an “exceptional measure” “For all children over the age of 5 .

In his account of this sad event in Alma, in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Géhane Kamel also pleads for better funding of the organization whose stakeholders are still struggling with a workload and excessive administrative burden, despite the recommendations of the Laurent -Commission.

“The labor shortage and recruiting labor for an environment like the DYP remains a major challenge. In 2016, it was a starved budget that management had to maneuver with. Today there is an exodus of stakeholders,” she says.

In this context, coroner Géhane Kamel therefore recommends the implementation of an “extraordinary measure” at the DYP, which states that all children under the age of 5 who are the subject of a report “must be subjected to an immediate assessment and daily monitoring of the situation”.

Remember that Thomas Audet died on June 18, 2016 from multiple injuries. He had been on the DPJ waiting list for three weeks when he was found unconscious in the apartment by his stepfather, who shared the child with his mother.
