A sacristan was killed and several people, including a priest, were injured in a knife attack in a church in Algeciras in the south of the country.

A sexton was killed and a priest injured in a knife attack on a church in Algeciras, southern Spain, on Tuesday January 24, a police source told AFP, adding that a man had been arrested.

A preliminary investigation was initiated into suspected acts of terrorism. It will be conducted by a Magistrate of the National Audience, a court specifically responsible for terrorism cases, prosecutors said, without giving further details.

The attacker armed with a machete

“The knife attack” happened “just before 8 p.m.” in the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, the interior ministry said. One person was killed outside the church and one injured inside the church, the ministry added. A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sacristan, while one of the injured was a priest. According to this source, the attacker was wearing a djellaba and was “yelling something” at the time of the attack.

Local media, based on testimonies, indicate that the attacker was armed with a machete, which he used to kill the sexton. “The facts are analyzed and investigated. It is currently not possible to determine the nature of the attack,” said the Interior Ministry.
