Day Care: Mother-to-Daughter Educators

A childcare worker for nearly 30 years, a mother passed her “love for children” on to her two daughters, who today are following in her footsteps and pursuing what they believe to be a “very important” profession.

As the government prepares to launch an advertising campaign to encourage young people to enroll in CEGEP to raise children, Julie Girard can boast of giving her two daughters the sting of the trade.

In addition, Laurence and Maude Roussel, aged 24 and 22 respectively, have chosen to work in the same environment as their mother, namely at the Early Childhood Center (CPE) Les Petits Cheminots in Quebec, in the Bursts of Laughter.

“My mother certainly has a lot to do with it,” says Laurence, who has been a specialist teacher for almost three years.

“We could have gone elsewhere. But it was kind of comforting to go to work in the same environment as her, even if she’s embarrassed at times! she adds laughing.

His sister Maude recently completed a Attestation of Collegial Studies in Early Childhood Education, in Short-Term Training (COUD) while working with young children.

Surprise !

While they regularly find themselves on the same floor, it’s not uncommon for Julie to be replaced by one of her daughters during a break.

“When they come into my room and say ‘mama’ to me, it’s to see the faces of the children who don’t understand me. For them, only their mother exists! ‘ says the mother of the family.

“I am fortunate to work with my daughters. I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else,” she continues.

“I’ve always talked about my work at home since I was little. We babies always loved it,” says Julie, who unsurprisingly adopted the nursery.

To try is to accept

But it must be said that the younger Roussel sisters showed little interest in the profession.

“I remember my mother coming home from work and she was tired. I told myself it was too difficult and that I would never do it. Now I get it, but it’s also so rewarding! says Maude.

When they came to help their mother with work, they changed their minds.

“You can’t have a bad day. The children always hug us and tell us “I love you”. Sometimes I have tougher days, that’s for sure, but when they come up to me to kiss me after a nap, it seems like we forget everything,” says Maude.
