DENVER — Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy had a “fight plan.” Certainly Denver Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett had exactly the same plan.
And just before the two clubs practiced together here in Denver on Thursday, McCarthy put the plan into words.
“It’s not harshness,” McCarthy said of “extracurricular” stupidity. “If you hit a shot in a game, you will be ejected. And players who do this will be kicked out of practice. …And no hitting the quarterback. … We are here for the right reasons.”
Yes but no.
As Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth.”
The Denver Broncos hosted the Cowboys at their training camp in Centennial, Colo. on Thursday, and of course a scuffle ensued.
Actually by our count from the sidelines? There were six fights.

The Cowboys and Broncos both head into the 2022 season with goals high, and the idea of this session was to sort of double down on work output. But as one Dallas coach told CowboysSI.com after the Mile High dust settled, “When you have more fights than touchdowns, you start wasting your time.”
That’s not to say some things haven’t been accomplished; QB Dak Prescott was sharp, accurate and mobile. CeeDee Lamb was a tough cover. It looked like Terence Steele and Kelvin Joseph were having solid days. And Micah Parsons gave Denver QB Russell Wilson nightmares.
But while Dallas and Denver prepare to meet in both teams’ first preseason game Saturday night at Empower Field in Mile High.
