It was the Ukrainian sea resort of the Soviet world, then Russia’s neighbor after the collapse of the communist bloc, before being annexed by Moscow in 2014. The Crimean peninsula is again overtaken by war with the invasion of Ukraine, to which it is attached by a strip of land. In August, explosions rang out at Russia’s largest air base and ammunition depot when a Ukrainian drone flying over the Russian Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol was shot down.

Panic has spread to Crimea and vacationers have rushed to leave across the suspension bridge built in 2018 that connects it to Russia. When calm has returned and Russian tourists too, the situation with their access to the Black Sea will remain as strategic for the Kremlin as for Kyiv, which lost it. The airspace there is closed, but buses coming directly from Moscow often go to Crimea’s beaches. The majority of the Russian-speaking population supports Vladimir Putin’s policies.

The Kremlin carried out extensive works on the peninsula’s infrastructure, restoring the Soviet-era hotels and sanatoriums. Ensuring the belonging of residents under infusion and Russian propaganda, as is the case in all its territories and enclaves, relatively indifferent to the conflict raging not far away. However, anti-aircraft surveillance has improved, with helicopters and drones circling to keep an eye on the Russian Navy headquarters. Crimea, which made its way in international tourism, has retreated to the Russian world. A war prize from the Kremlin that Kyiv wants to get back from him one day.
