Covid 19: China announces peak of epidemic ahead of Lunar New Year holiday

Millions of travelers will travel across the country in celebration of the Lunar New Year.

China has said it has reached the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic wave it is currently going through, as large displacements are expected on Friday, the Lunar New Year.

Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan, who oversees efforts to combat COVID-19, said the scale of the epidemic is “relatively low,” Chinese state media reported Thursday. Doubts remain, however, about the data on the epidemic reported by China since the departure from the “zero-COVID” policy.

“Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic has reached a relatively low level in the country,” Sun Chunlan said. “The number of hospital patients in critical condition continues to decline.” Millions of travelers are expected to leave cities on Friday to reunite with their families for the Lunar New Year holiday, which begins January 21.
