Henry Zavriyev, owner of the downtown Montreal building, is appealing the Superior Court’s decision. In November it ruled that it had full jurisdiction to settle the dispute between the residents and the owner.

In July, the same court issued a security order, according to which the building cannot be converted immediately.

Mr Zavriyev disagrees and this morning he tries again to prove that the Supreme Court does not have the necessary jurisdiction.

A decision from the Court of Appeals is expected on Wednesday.

The change of career desired by the owner was announced almost a year ago.

Ahead of the holidays, Mr Zavriyev said he was tired of being portrayed as an advocate of ‘renewal’ for the elderly and went out in the media. He said he wanted the debate to be depersonalized, arguing that his business decisions were the same as those of so many other private housing managers for struggling seniors.

He asked the government to look into the matter.
