Coffins and urns from cemetery in Italy washed away by heavy rain

A cemetery in southern Italy was partially destroyed due to heavy rains. Around 20 coffins and around 80 urns fell into an adjacent creek bed in the village of Sant’Agata de’ Goti in the Campania region, as reported by the fire brigade and the media today. Recently, the stream ran out of water, said mayor Salvatore Riccio. However, heavy rains filled the creek with water again, which damaged the hillside with the cemetery.

Amateur photos showed how part of the cemetery with the coffins and urns had sunk several meters. The fire department cordoned off the area and recovered the remains. The public prosecutor wants to investigate the incident – there have been similar incidents in the past. For the next few days, again heavy rain is forecast for the Campania region.
