Christian Atsu found dead after earthquake in Turkey – agent

Christian Atsu was found dead under the building where he lived almost two weeks after the earthquake hit Turkey, the former Newcastle United winger’s agent has said.

Atsu, 31, spent eight years at Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Bournemouth, Everton and Newcastle.

The Ghana international had not been seen since the devastating 7.8 magnitude quake that killed more than 38,000 people in Turkey and more than 5,800 in Syria.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must announce to all well wishers that Christian Atsu’s body was regrettably recovered this morning,” his agent Nana Sechere tweeted on Saturday.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

Atsu’s club, Hatayspor, initially reported that he was bailed out ‘with injuries’ but a day later that position changed.

Former Chelsea club captain John Terry tweeted on Saturday: “RIP my friend.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, sent “our heartfelt condolences to Christian’s family and friends and to everyone affected by the earthquake tragedy.”

Istanbul team Galatasaray said: “We are saddened to learn that Atakas Hatayspor footballer Christian Atsu lost his life in the earthquake that suffocated our country.

“Our condolences go out to Christian Atsu’s family, fans and Hatayspor community.”

Atsu is survived by his wife Marie-Claire Rupio Atsu and their three children.
