Canadian defenseman Mike Matheson was fined $5,000 on Friday for an act he committed against Florida Panthers forward Eric Staal at Bell Center the previous day.

The hab’s back hit his opponent near the boards in the first leg of the game, which was won 6-2 by the visitors. Staal was out of the game after the sequence, Matheson didn’t get a penalty from the referees for his handicap, but the opposing players wanted revenge on their team-mate. The Canadian’s color bearer also threw down the gloves with Matthew Tkachuk in the third period.
The Montreal team will look to get back on track as hosts of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
