Butterflies star Bruce Montague has died: The Doctor Who and Hollyoaks actor dies aged 83 as agent pays tribute to ‘the gentleman who is sorely missed’.

Butterflies actor Bruce Montague has died at the age of 83, his agent has confirmed.

The actor, who also starred in Doctor Who and Hollyoaks, will be “sorryly missed”.

Talent agency Belfield and Ward announced the sad news, writing: “We are very saddened to announce that the glorious Bruce Montague has passed away.

Bruce famously played Leonard Dunn in the sitcom Butterflies.

During his eventful career he starred in over 300 television productions, the first being in 1965 when he landed a role in the sci-fi drama Undermind.

The TV legend also had an incredibly successful stage career, starring as Mr Brownlow in Oliver! and Firman in The Phantom of the Opera.

More recently he portrayed Abner Dillon on a UK tour of 42nd Street and returned in the role for the great West End revival in 2017 at the Theater Royal Drury Lane.

He then appeared in the Savoy production of Funny Girl alongside Sheridan Smith and Darius Danesh, who tragically died last week aged 41.

Bruce’s co-star Joel Montague was shocked to hear the news of his death and took to his Instagram to share a heartfelt tribute.

Posting a picture of the couple together and calling him his “stage dad,” he wrote, “I can’t believe this!!!

“Sad few days for the Funny Girl Family!!!! RIP Bruce Montague (no relationship but I called him my stage dad) what a wonderful man he was #ripbruce.
