Bus overturned and hit ambulance: at least 16 dead in Turkey

At least 16 people died in a serious traffic accident in southeastern Turkey. Twenty-one other people were injured in the accident, which involved a bus, a fire engine and an ambulance, among others, Gaziantep provincial governor Davut Gul said on Saturday.

Among the dead were firefighters, medical staff and two journalists, Gül said at the scene of the accident. Journalists originally came to the crash site to report on a previous crash. An oncoming bus had an accident, overturned and hit an ambulance and the journalists’ van.

The two journalists worked for the state agency IHA, according to state broadcaster TRT. Loud hiccups can be heard in a broadcaster’s report. The agency’s cameraman, who was there to report on the deaths of his colleagues, “couldn’t hold back his tears,” TRT said.

The injured are being treated at the hospital. Nothing was initially known about the extent of the injury.
