Bruce Springsteen

Phil DeSimone for Rolling Stone

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are five shows on their 2023 world tour, and they’ve just announced dates for a series of late summer stadium shows in North America, followed by arena dates later in the year. The new leg begins August 9th at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois and ends December 8th at Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Advance ticket sales begin this Friday.

The tour kicked off February 1 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. Featuring an expanded E-Street band with a five-piece horn section, four backup singers and a percussionist, Springsteen performed a set that included classics like “Born To Run”, “Badlands” and “The Promised Land” with 2020s selections mixed Letter To You and Deep Cuts, including “The E Street Shuffle”, “Johnny 99” and “Candy’s Room”. The setlist stayed relatively fixed over the next four nights, but he added “Thunder Road”, “Ramrod”, “Darlington County”, “Mansion on the Hill” and “Detroit Medley”.

Guitarist Steven Van Zandt missed the February 10 show in Dallas after collapsing with Covid. Backing vocalist/guitarist Patti Scialfa and violinist/guitarist Soozie Tyrell were also absent. The result was quite a unique show, with Springsteen and Nils Lofgren doing all the guitar parts. Since 1988, Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Trip. After the show, news broke that Lofgren had also contracted Covid.

The tour resumes tonight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and the first American leg concludes April 14 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Springsteen and the band will be spending much of the summer in Europe playing stadiums and a handful of festivals.

This tour follows a six-year hiatus from the streets for the E Street Band, the longest since reform in 1999. Ticket prices were significantly higher than previous tours, prompting a huge backlash from fans, although most shows are still sold out were. “You don’t like being criticized,” Springsteen told Rolling Stone last year. “They certainly don’t like being the poster child for high ticket prices. It’s the last thing you’d rather be. But that’s how it went. You have to accept the choices you’ve made and go out there and just keep doing your best. And that was my opinion on it. I think if people come to the show, they’re going to have a good time.”
