Brooke Boney, 35, has praised the Today Show for becoming more diverse since co-host Sarah Abo, 36, stepped into her new role this week.

Explaining that she and Sarah don’t take their positions for granted, the entertainment presenter, who is a proud Gomeroi woman, told TV Tonight: “It’s really very special and very cool that we get to do this.”

Sarah, who was born in Syria and moved to Australia when she was four, received a call from Brooke on Monday following her debut as the presenter of the Today show.

According to Brooke, the pair were “reflecting” on what it meant for both of them to have such high-profile roles on the television morning show.

Explaining that television is about representation, she said: “You have to have a reason to throw yourself into the television world so much.

“For me it’s about representation because when I was younger there weren’t any Blackfellas who were part of news and current affairs programs or breakfast TV.”

Brooke recalled how her grandparents were not allowed to be seen during the day, but now the tables have drastically turned as she now greets everyone every morning.

The 35-year-old admitted that the feeling is always close to her heart.

“It never escaped me how important and how special this is.”
