British actor Julian Sands identified as missing hiker

CNN —

British actor Julian Sands, known for his work on shows like 24 and films like A Room with a View and Arachnophobia, has been reported missing since last Friday while hiking in the Mt Baldy, California area to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Sands was reported missing at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13, Gloria Huerta, a department spokeswoman, told CNN.

CNN has reached out to Sands officials for comment.

Mt. Baldy is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of San Bernardino County.

Search and rescue teams were on the mountain looking for Sands, but due to severe weather and an avalanche threat, rescuers had to halt their search efforts, Huerta said.

Officials continue to use drones to search for sands but are limited with other resources due to the weather on Mt. Baldy, Huerta added.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department recently warned hikers not to visit Mt. Baldy, where high winds and ice continue to make conditions dangerous.

In a post on Facebook, the agency said search and rescue teams have conducted 14 rescue operations on Mt Baldy and the surrounding area over the past four weeks.

“These rescue missions were for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, in the past 4 weeks, two hikers have not survived after falling and injuring themselves,” the post reads. “Recent storms that have brought snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those who think they have a high level of experience.”

Sand’s other work includes films such as The Killing Fields and Leaving Las Vegas, and TV shows such as Smallville.

His most recent work includes a recurring role on the Netflix television series What/If.
