Brazil: Storm kills at least 19 people

This Sunday, a storm east of São Paulo on the north coast of Brazil’s most important state killed 19 people.

The damage is extensive and the hours are numbered for residents of the northern region of São Paulo, Brazil. Authorities have announced the deaths of 19 people living in the state after heavy rains hit the region’s north coast since Saturday, February 18.

“So far, 19 deaths have been officially registered” in the coastal region north of the capital, the state government said in a statement, as an operation to support the victims and displaced persons is underway.

According to the heads of state, almost 600 millimeters of rain were recorded in some areas of the region, including Bertioga and São Sebastião, where the deaths of a 40-year-old woman and a 9-month-old baby were observed, according to the State Civil Protection.

Precipitation rates recorded there are among the highest recorded in Brazil, apart from tropical cyclones. An extraordinary situation that required the declaration of a public disaster in the state of São Paulo.
