Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie plane incident in 2016: FBI report reveals new details

In the heavily redacted report, which was made available to both parties as a result of a freedom of information request, the actress told agents that when she was traveling back to California with Pitt and their six children after a two-week vacation, her then-husband had been drinking when he told her to accompany him to the back of the plane after he had a tense interaction with one of her children.

Pitt’s name is redacted in the report, but makes multiple references to her husband, who was married to Jolie at the time of the alleged incident.

Once there, she said, they were in a restroom that had a private door that didn’t allow her children to see her, as she claimed Pitt “grabbed her head,” “grabbed her shoulders,” her She slammed into the bathroom wall and yelled at her various things, including “You’re ruining this family,” the report said.

“In response to allegations made following a flight within U.S. aircraft special jurisdiction that landed in Los Angeles with Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a investigation into the circumstances and will not be investigating further . No charges have been filed in this matter,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in a statement to CNN at the time.

CNN has reached out to representatives from Pitt and Jolie for comment.

“All parties have had this information for almost six years and have been used in previous court cases. There is nothing new here and serves no purpose other than a media stunt intended to inflict pain,” a source close to Pitt said of the forthcoming report.

According to the FBI report, Jolie told investigators that two of her children (whose names are not included in the redacted report but were considered minors at the time) “were standing at the door crying and asking, ‘Are you okay, Mom?’ “

Pitt reportedly yelled in response, “No, mommy’s not well. She’s ruining this family. She’s crazy,” the report said.

According to Jolie, this prompted one of her children to respond, “‘It’s not her, it’s you, you p***k’,” which she angrily told Pitt, and she claimed she saw him run at one of the kids “like.” he wanted to attack,” she said as she put Pitt in a choke hold, which he tried to break by throwing himself back and pushing her into the chairs behind them, the report said.

Jolie claimed in the report that she sustained injuries to her back and elbow as a result, and shared a photo of the injury to her elbow with the FBI.

The report includes black-and-white photocopies of the photos, as well as handwritten pages that Jolie allegedly provided by her children that describe the alleged incident. The handwritten pages are heavily edited.

Jolie also said in the report that Pitt continued to drink throughout the two-legged journey and later doused her in beer. After arriving in Los Angeles, the couple had a physical altercation and she says Pitt prevented her and the children from getting off the plane for 20 minutes.

In addition to her back and elbow, the report said Jolie also sustained “a carpet burn-type wound” on her left hand. A photo of the wound is included in the edited report. She was asked about a reported scratch on Pitt, which Jolie said in the report could have been caused by her, though she believed she had it more in a stranglehold.

According to the report, after reviewing a statement regarding the probable cause of the incident, a US Attorney’s Office representative “discussed the merits of this investigation with the [FBI] case agent.”

“All parties agreed that no criminal charges will be filed in this case due to a number of factors,” the report said.

CNN has reached out to US Attorneys for comment.

When CNN emailed him, an FBI spokesman replied, “No charges have been filed in connection with this matter and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Jolie filed for divorce shortly after the incident, and although a dissolution of her marriage was granted in 2019, her litigation over the ownership and custody of her minor children has continued over the years, with a California Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last year granting a retired judge assigned to arbitrate custody dispute should be disqualified due to potential conflict of interest. In 2020, Jolie told Vogue India that she broke up with Pitt because of their children. “I split for the sake of my family,” she said. “It was the right decision. I remain focused on her healing.” Pitt told GQ in 2017 that he quit drinking after “drinking” too much over the past year. In an interview with Britain’s GQ in June 2022, he spoke about finding more peace lately.

“I’ve always felt very alone in my life,” he told the publication, “growing up alone as a kid, alone out here, and it’s only recently that I’ve embraced my friends and family better.”
