Biden: “NATO is more important and needed now than ever”

WASHINGTON – “There is no doubt that NATO is as important, effective and necessary today as it has ever been,” and at the same time its expansion “poses no threat to any nation,” Biden said at a joint White House news briefing with Sweden Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. For Biden, NATO is “an indispensable alliance” for peace and the free world. “I offer strong support to Sweden and Finland to join the world’s most powerful alliance,” which “meets all the criteria” for membership, the US President added.
“It’s a historic moment”.
Biden then said, “We remain vigilant against security threats and will discourage or confront intimidation against Sweden and Finland.”
“We were forced to respond to Russian aggression,” the Swedish prime minister said at the joint press conference, announcing that his country will soon reach the 2% of GDP threshold for military spending. For his part, the Finnish President said: “It is a pleasure and an honor to be here: we are here for a good reason, namely our application for membership in NATO.” He then thanked Biden for “the firm support.
Finland will become a strong NATO ally”.
