The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has been cautious in its public statements, confining itself to saying that police officers were at the scene and that investigators were still “assigned” to the incident.

“For obvious security reasons, whether for our members, the population and the individual concerned, we cannot disclose more [d’information] in relation to their position on the field,” said Sergeant Hélène St-Pierre.

According to information from Radio-Canada, the police do not rule out that the suspect may have gone to New Brunswick. However, the SQ did not want to confirm this possibility.

Vaillancourt, who has a solid criminal record, fled after being seen in Matane. He then left the road in Saint-Ulric before fleeing on foot.
