US President Joe Biden released more than 13,000 files on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, some of which were previously classified or deleted. They are more likely to raise than resolve doubts about whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

It’s early Christmas for history buffs and conspiracy theorists this year: 13,173 previously partially classified documents about the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy were released by US President Joe Biden on Thursday. It was the last possible day: Biden’s self-imposed deadline of a year ago expired on Thursday. At the time, he had postponed the publication of the files: the security services needed more time to check the material because of the Covid pandemic.

The flash, the allegations, the protagonists: The reconstruction of the worst case of corruption in the history of the European Union

On December 9, 2022, Croatia-Brazil and Holland-Argentina will play at the World Cup in Qatar, and the next day Morocco will defeat Portugal and advance to the semi-finals. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, is in Malta when her mobile phone rings. The Belgian police called her back to Brussels so that they could search the house of one of the 14 Vice-Presidents, the Greek Eva Kaili, in her presence. The anti-corruption investigation began in July, but Coroner Michel Claise has been waiting for this day for a long time. In 2019 Panzeri “handed over” to Eva Kaili, a former TV journalist and socialist MEP with studies between Thessaloniki and Harvard, his assistant Francesco Giorgi, originally from Abbiategrasso, degree in political science from the State University of Milan and sailing teacher. Today, Kaili and Giorgi, aged 44 and 35, have a 22-month-old daughter. Eva denies any involvement, attributes the money to Panzeri, and in a tragic hoax not very appropriate for this tale of bribes and binge drinking, swears: I will not be Iphigenia (the daughter who in the myth Agamemnon agrees to sacrifice, to restart the blocked Greek ships to Troy in Aulis). Giorgi admits he allowed himself to be “recruited” but defends his partner, also taking responsibility for Alexandros’ escape and naming his current boss, MEP Antonio Cozzolino. Cozzolino is not under investigation or searched, but he has suspended himself from the S&D faction and in Italy he has been provisionally suspended from the Pd. The others arrested in the mega-blitz are Luca Visentini, secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, who was later released, and Niccolò Figà-Talamanca, head of the NGO No Peace Without Justice, who is now on probation. Searches and seals in the offices of mostly Italian parliamentary assistants never fail to incite irony and outrage at the old Italian job, but the “gate” has just opened and the investigation is revealing new ramifications daily. Press sources already speak of 60 MPs involved.

What was the money for? The investigative trail leads to Qatar and Morocco, looking for shores inside the EU buildings to pursue strategic goals and rehabilitate their image as authoritarian states with poor human rights standards. Economic agreement, recognition of progress made. As for Morocco, which for geographical and historical reasons has older and more deeply rooted ties with Europe, the most sensitive dossiers, which required a tolerant if not complacent look, ranged from fisheries to freedom of expression and the conflict with the Fighting of the Polisario Front for the self-determination of the Saharawi people in the areas of Western Sahara. A crisis that divides the 27 and in which the EU has always maintained an ambiguous impartiality.

Spies and Gifts

After turbulent parliamentary elections in the Pacific island nation of Fiji, there is no clear political majority in sight. Both Fiji’s First Party of current Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and the coalition led by opposition leader Sitiveni Rabuka each have 26 of the 55 parliamentary seats, according to the tally published online by Fiji’s electoral office. The elections have political significance beyond Fiji: the current candidate, Bainimarama, is close to China – while his opponent, Rabuka, seeks greater distance from Beijing.

Complicated and protracted negotiations are likely to take place before a government can be formed. Leading candidates Bainimarama and Rabuka are already courting the small Social Democratic party around deeply religious businessman Viliame Gavoka, who has three seats in the future parliament and is likely to tip the scales.

Change of position already several times by coup d’état

Fiji has been rocked by four coups in the past 35 years. Both the current Bainimarama and his challenger Rabuka had already come to power through coups. Messi scored in Argentina’s first game at Qatar 2022 – a shock defeat by Saudi Arabia.

Messi scored in the last game – a stunning humiliation of last year’s finalists Croatia.

In between, he scored three more goals and provided an assist that not only confirmed his status, stature and hulking presence, but also sent infidels to place their pot of gold next to the blue and white stripes.

“It’s just Messi, wallah (by God), it’s just Messi,” said Mohammad Nahawi, a Brazilian fan who was in awe of Messi after the Argentine’s spectacle against Croatia in the semifinals.

Messi’s story is a tragic tale, one of incomplete dreams, unfulfilled desires and heights he dreams of. But for Sunday the stages are set, the script is written and the lawn is watered. It may very well be that the dream is completed, the desires fulfilled, the heights achieved.

The ball dances to its whistle, and so should the sport. But that’s not it. Not until he lifts the trophy that matters most, to him, to the country, to these billions who wear the number 10 stripes and chant his name in Rosario, Kerala, Dhaka, Bangkok and Doha.

There was exceptional demand for Messi’s number 10 shirt as he made his way to the final. It had sold out in some countries and had run out in others.

Such was the demand that Adidas issued a statement saying the company was working to “bring more jerseys to fans so they can celebrate an incredible journey for the national team”.

“He’s the special, the best, the crazy, call him what you want, he’s the one,” said Federico, who was born in Rosario, the city that gave Messi to the world.

“No one can take the ball from him, he’s in that place right now. He has his best World Championship and we are so proud of him and what he has achieved so far.”

When the final whistle blew against Croatia in the semifinals, Messi was alone on the halfway line. He looked up, looked down and leaned in before engaging in a bear hug with the substitutes.

He realized he was within reach of fulfilling his dream, the dream of a nation and the millions who wear the blue and white stripes with the 10 on their backs.

France have already lost once in this tournament. But they just want to become the third team to win back-to-back World Cups (Italy 1934 and 1938, Brazil 1958 and 1962), so victory isn’t handed out on a plate.

It can’t just be about Messi on Sunday at the Lusail Stadium. But after seeing the mark he’s left in the last month or so and how the calm of a late November night was shattered with utter disdain by the Argentinian fans celebrating his goal against Mexico, it could very well be.
