A shooting that occurred in Monterey Park near Los Angeles in the early hours of this Sunday morning has claimed at least nine lives, according to the County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting happened after 10:00 p.m. (7:00 a.m. Peninsular Time) in an area where thousands of people had been celebrating Chinese New Year hours earlier. The sheriff’s office issued a brief statement saying the suspect is a man, without clarifying whether he was arrested.
The owner of a local restaurant told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into his place and asked him to lock the door because “a man with a machine gun” was standing in the street. Another witness cited by the newspaper said he heard “four or five shots” and then police sirens.
Monterey Park is located six miles east of Los Angeles and has a large population (65% according to official figures) of Asian American and Latino (27%) origin.
