At least 41 dead in the Coptic Church in Cairo, “short circuit”

(ANSA) — CAIRO, AUGUST 14 — 41 people died in a fire at a Coptic church in Cairo. The fire, caused by the power failure of an air conditioner, which Egypt’s Interior Ministry said would have caused an explosion during Sunday mass, broke out at the Abu Sifine church in Imbaba, Giza governorate.

Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar has ordered that all health services and care be provided to those injured in the fire. According to the ministry spokesman, 55 were injured and transported to hospitals in Imbaba and Al Agouza. A state of alert has been declared in hospitals in Cairo and Giza.

Egyptian Attorney General Hamada Al-Sawi has deployed a team of inspectors to investigate the blaze.
