At 55

When I turned 55, a good friend had the detail of sending me – guarded by my favorite wine – some basic rules to apply to life that fall, which Alberto Cortez called in one of his heartiest compositions: “the parable of itself”. Let’s see some of them.

It’s time to use the money you’ve been saving all your life for yourself. (Remember that nothing is more dangerous than a son-in-law with ideas). It is not a time for investments, no matter how wonderful they may seem, they will only bring fear to you, and this time must be a time of great peace and tranquility.

If it’s for you, always buy the best and finest. After death, money only breeds hatred and resentment between heirs.

Always keep love alive. “The man is the age of the woman who loves him.”

always be clean Goes to the hairdresser frequently, and nothing that is very modern is classic.

Don’t be tempted to live with your children. Get a housekeeper to accompany you instead, and don’t make that decision until you think the end is near.

Talk little and listen more because your past only interests you. If someone asks you about these things, keep it short and try to talk about good and pleasant things.

never regret anything Pain will always be there, don’t make it a bigger problem than it is by talking about it.

Don’t get so attached to religion and pray and supplicate like a fanatic all the time. The good thing is that you will soon be able to place your orders in person
Laugh, laugh a lot, laugh at everything, you’re lucky. You had a long life and death will only be a new uncertain stage as all existence is uncertain.

Visit the places where you were happy without giving in to a moment of nostalgia.

Finally, read again and again the fundamental books of your life, nourish yourself with sacred poetry and follow the mythical advice of Mario Benedetti:

“Don’t give up/, please don’t give up/ even if the cold is burning/,
even when fear bites/, even when the sun goes down/ and the wind dies down/.
In your soul there is still fire/, in your dreams there is still life/,
because every day is a beginning
Because this is the time and the best time”.
