Art Night Rai Story

Art Night Rai Story

The work of one of the most extraordinary architectural studios in the world: this is what tells “Inside Renzo Piano Building Workshop”, the documentary by Francesca Molteni, directed by Claudia Adragna and Davide Fois, which will be broadcast in first broadcast on Wednesday 18 January at 9.15 p.m. Rai 5, for “Art Night” with Neri Marcorè. The Renzo Piano Building Workshop is an Italian-style laboratory, indeed a workshop, a place of research, experimentation and collaborative production. Here people create and discuss, models are developed like logical thinking with your hands; because, as Piano always says, “what doesn’t stand on its own isn’t worth making.” We work as a team like on a construction site: “A construction site of ideas next to the construction site of hands and the construction site of stones”.
“We were able to enter one of the most important architectural offices in the world as attentive spectators – explains Francesca Molteni. What happens here is the miracle of creation: from the project outline to the strong physicality of a construction site. Behind all this is Renzo Piano, idea generator, with two of his greatest qualities: being a mentor who manages to distance himself from a project and his extraordinary ability to visualize the problem and find the best solution.”

The documentary stages Piano’s “workshop” method: what happens in the studios at Punta Nave in Genoa and in Paris, on construction sites – in Europe, in Asia, in America – at work meetings in the studio, in interviews with consultants and customers.
Five projects were selected and accompanied for 18 months in different phases of conception and realization: the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, California, inaugurated in 2021, a highly representative construction site (the factory of the imaginary); Science Gateway of Cern in Geneva, Switzerland, still under construction, a construction site with a high proportion of community (Science Factory); the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Paris-Saclay, completed in 2020, research site in a large park with a high educational content (knowledge factory); the Snf Thessaloniki General Hospital in Sparta, Greece, a sustainable construction site with high humanitarian content (the Health Factory); the Marunouchi Tokyo Marine in Tokyo, a technological construction site in the center of the city with a high symbolic value (work factory).
Five different places, three continents, five social and environmental contexts that have little in common except the Renzo Piano Building Workshop method.
