Heche, who was hospitalized at West Hills Hospital’s Grossman Burn Center, suffered a “severe cerebral anoxic injury” in the crash on Aug. 5, according to a statement released Thursday night on behalf of her family and friends . One such injury is caused by a persistent lack of oxygen to the brain, most likely since she was trapped in her car and inhaled smoke from the car fire.
