André Spénard dies at the age of 72

Former mayor of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce and former member of the Avenir Québec Coalition André Spénard has died at the age of 72.

A native of Thetford-Mines, he has battled cancer for several years. A graduate of the University of Laval, Mr. Spénard worked for many years as General Manager of the adapted company L’Atelier de readaptation au travail de Beauce.

In 1996 he was elected Mayor of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, a position he held until 2005. From 2012 to 2018 he was a deputy in Beauce-Nord for François Legault’s party. In particular, this politician became the spokesman for the second opposition group on local politics matters during his visit to the National Assembly.

After the announcement of André Spénard’s death, there were numerous tributes on social networks.

On Twitter, Prime Minister François Legault spoke of Mr Spénard as a heterosexual man and a proud Beauceron who has dedicated much of his life to public service.

The current Beauce-Nord MP, Luc Provençal, also expressed his sadness at the death of the man with whom he had developed a great friendship.

On its Facebook page, the community of Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce praised the man’s commitment to his community.
