The Mexican government, through a publication in its country’s official gazette, has stipulated that no government agency or selfsufficiency can sign new contracts with the carrier Calafia Airlines until early next year, and has nevertheless fined the company. The government has not clarified the reasons for its decision, as reported by CAPA.
The official release also clarified that if the company fails to pay the fine before the sixmonth ban expires, the sanction will continue until the fine is paid. Existing contracts and those in the process of being formalized are exempt from the ban.
Little known, Calafia Airlines has a fleet of four Embraer ERJ145 jets and one EMB120 Brasília turboprop. It connects the Pacific coast of Mexico with the states of Baja California Sur, Baja California, Sonora, Nueva Leon, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Jalisco.
According to the Federal Aviation Office, the company handled 153,535 passengers in 2021. In January 2022, 10,351 passengers were handled, an increase of 44.1% compared to the same period in 2021.
