In 2022, the unemployment rate in Tyrol was 4%, the lowest since 1984. At the same time, never before have so many people been employed. Staffing requirements are stronger than ever.

Compared to 2021, the average number of unemployed fell by 36.4%. With an annual average of 14,724 unemployed, unemployment has reached a 21-year low. Dependent employment (over 350,000 employments) and the number of vacancies reported to AMS Tirol (9,877) reached a record. The unemployment rate was 4% in Tyrol in 2022 and was lower in 1984 (3.8%).

“For the first time since the 19th century, the Tyrolean population aged 20 to 64 has shrunk. This demographic shift will be even more noticeable in the coming years than it is today. We must not underestimate this development towards the ‘Silver Society’”, sums up Sabine Platzer-Werlberger, from the state directorate of AMS Tirol.

Despite the still very tense geopolitical situation, the forecast for the Tyrolean job market in 2023 is cautiously positive. Unemployment and the unemployment rate are expected to increase slightly in year-on-year terms. Active employment will also continue to increase due to increased labor force participation among older workers and women and continued immigration of workers from abroad.

“Staff shortages will continue to be the biggest challenge in the job market. In the international competition for workers, decisive reforms are needed that go far beyond labor market politics. Equal opportunities in education, skilled immigration, support for caring relatives, a high-quality expansion of child care to school age and greater participation of older people in the labor market can all contribute to mitigating the situation. Our world of work will fundamentally change in the coming years as a result of the new balance of power,” says Platzer-Werlberger.

As of December 31, 2022, 15,245 people were unemployed in Tyrol. In all sectors, unemployment fell by 1,644 people compared to the previous year (9.7% less). Across Austria, unemployment fell by 7.9%. With 15,245 unemployed and around 361,000 employed (7,000 more employed compared to the previous year), the unemployment rate in December 2022 in Tyrol was 4.1%.
