The J. Edgar Hoover Building, the FBI’s crumbling and soon-to-be-replaced headquarters, was unceremoniously named “America’s Ugliest Building.”
The 2.4 million square foot concrete monstrosity in the US capital of Washington DC received the award from Buildworld, a UK-based home improvement retailer.
Dedicated in 1975 and named after the very first FBI director, the Hoover Building has been described as having “a certain Minecraft-esque charm of the blocky brutalist monolith,” but now “it’s just a reminder of the worst politics of the 20th century and.” the 21st century surveillance state.’
In addition to topping the ugliest list in America, the building also took second place in Buildworld’s ranking of the world’s ugliest buildings, losing to the Scottish Parliament Buildings in Edinburgh.

Buildworld’s rankings were determined by a sentiment analysis tool called HuggingFace, which analyzed tweets to gauge people’s reactions to different buildings.
The company found that over 37 percent of tweets about the Hoover Building’s design were rated as negative.
But hopefully the FBI won’t have to put up with their hideous home much longer as they determine where to build their new headquarters after years of trying to pin down a location.

Rounding out the top 5 are the Verizon Building in New York, the Watergate Complex in Washington and Denver Airport.
Trump Tower in Las Vegas ranked sixth in the rankings and tenth overall worldwide.
