Audiences found the “crater scene” in All Quiet On The Western Front unnerving – and director Ed Berger reveals it brought some of the crew to tears too.

Berger said his British cameraman cried during the four days it took to film the scene where Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer) encounters a wounded French soldier during a trench warfare in World War I.

“I started hearing a noise,” said Berger. “At one point I realized Danny, my cameraman, was crying.

“He was raised by his grandfather, who himself grew up during WWII and hated the Germans.

“But somehow, seeing that, Danny had a powerful realization that we are all the same.”
