In an interview with El Comercio, Rovegno Key She talks about her participation in the pageant that crowned R’Bonney Gabriel as Miss Universe 2022, the changes in the pageant, the rumors of alleged “sabotage” against her, and her personal and professional projects.

─Did you learn anything from the Miss Universe pageant?

Definitely personal growth. It was a very enriching experience. Often people stop doing things for fear of stepping out of our comfort zone, of failure, or of being judged, and what I can salvage most from this experience is to keep striving more, to do your best, and to surpass yourself. . I embrace every second of this process and carry it in my heart.

─Are you satisfied with the result?

I feel really happy and grateful. I believe that God has a perfect plan for each of us. Seeing my development throughout the process is a really satisfying feeling.

─Did you feel pressured by the beauty standards imposed by the pageant?

It was always clear to me that I still had a lot to learn as I had never competed before and that it not only put me under pressure but also irritated and motivated me. I never thought about what they’re going to say, nor did I focus on the negative.

─Did you expect to be in the top 16? What did it represent to you?

When you enter a competition, you want to win and be the best. I felt really good throughout the competition, especially in the interview which was one of the most important results, so I was calm when they were about to name the top.

─Is it true that someone tore your dress in the preliminary round? Was there a boycott or not?

I don’t know how they found out they ripped my dress (laughter). It’s true that it resolved and I had to date someone else, but I never said anything because those are things that happen, the most important thing is to resolve them.

─There was also talk of sabotage because the wings of your costume broke and your shoes were lost….

When we were wearing the signature costume at show time, we tried to put it together and it broke. Two minutes to go and the wings didn’t work. That doesn’t mean they sabotaged me, nobody knows what happened, maybe it broke when we were taking it from the hotel to the show location. In addition, Beto Pinedo’s suit was so spectacular that it attracted attention on its own.

─Stephanie Cayo warned: “No one takes the wings of someone who was made to fly.” How did you take his words?

This saying is very true. Stephanie and my whole family have been a tremendous support to me. The women in my family are very close, together we push and help each other, each one is an inspiration to me in her essence, it’s a blessing to have her.

─How did you receive criticism for your participation in the competition?

I’m very relaxed, sometimes so much that I get scared (laughter). There will always be criticism and I’ve had that in my head since I was a child. I don’t listen to them and I don’t let them influence me. Happiness depends on yourself, it’s better to ignore destructive comments and do what you have to do to achieve your goals and surround yourself with people who support you.

─Married women with children can participate in the next edition of Miss Universe. What do you think of the changes in the competition?

A woman is quite capable of fulfilling both roles at the same time.. I love children and if I could have 10 children I would have them, but I never doubted whether I would continue working or not. I think it’s great that they are opening the doors for more women who also have the dream of being Miss Universe.

─What did you think of the election of R’Bonney Gabriel, Miss United States, to Miss Universe?

I met her during the competition and she seems like a nice girl, quite mature. I know she received a lot of criticism when she was crowned Miss USA and also when she was crowned Miss Universe. Being Miss Universe is not an award, it is a job and you will apply for that job. If it’s there, it’s because he tried very hard and worked hard to achieve it.. I don’t think it’s fair that she’s being attacked like that. No one deserves this cyberbullying they have done. It needs more empathy, as a society we need to unite and motivate each other instead of destroying ourselves.

─What do you think of R’Bonney Gabriel’s decision to step down from his Miss USA commitments to devote 100% to his new responsibilities as Miss Universe?

Her goal was to be Miss Universe, she won and now she’s focused on that.

-Who was your favorite?

(laughs) I’ll keep that to myself. I was really struggling with myself and it was like that during the whole preparation and the competition.

─ Do you think your life has changed since taking part in the Miss Universe pageant?

It was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. A really enriching experience that has left me many positive things and for which I am grateful. You will hear news soon.

As Miss Peru, what activities will you be doing during the remaining time of your reign?

Within or outside of my regency, I will continue to do community work that fills my heart. I have always said that the work a Miss Peru does must also be a part of you before and after, and the preparation is not just for the reign but for your life.

─How did you celebrate your 25th birthday?

My birthday was coming up just after Miss Universe and at that point I wasn’t sure if I would be spending that day with my family or not. In the end we went to the snow, I parted a bit from work to be with them and enjoy them. It was a wonderful journey. As the family trip drew to a close, Hugo showed up with tickets to Hawaii he’d bought the day before. I couldn’t believe it, Hawaii is a destination I wanted to visit, it was a dream trip.

Will music continue to be part of your activities?

Naturally. Many surprises are coming and I can’t wait to tell you all. I’m really excited and happy. I have a musical duet with my sister that I put on hold to focus 100% on Miss Universe, but now we’re back with a bang.
