It’s a question everyone who’s ever watched John Hughes’ beloved teen comedy Ferris Bueler’s Day Off asks at some point, “Why do we spend all this time with these lousy kids when we could watch the valets huh? What are those valets up to while that idiot stares at the painting?”

Now that thirst for knowledge can finally be quenched as Deadline reports that a new film in the wider Ferris Bueller Cinematic Universe is in the works: Sam And Victor’s Day Off, which will delve deep into what these two previously unnamed valet guys (played Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins in the Hughes film) were on guard while bombing around Chicago in Cameron’s father’s car.

No, we don’t know why this happens either.

The film is being put together by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the team behind Cobra Kai, who clearly have some expertise in delving much deeper into the mythologies of 80’s cult films than one might first think. Bill Posley is apparently writing the screenplay.

And, like, are we wrong, or does this feel like something that would have been pitched maybe five streaming services ago? Maybe in this heady time when the hell anything could be a quibi if you had the money and just believed in it hard enough? Bueller is still popular, of course, but no one knows who the hell “Sam and Victor” are; They basically assume that viewers will see the words “Day Off” in the title, hear one of those “Bow bow ohhhhh yeah” from the soundtrack in the trailer, and have some kind of Pavlovian reaction that compels them to watch the movie . Why not just write an original comedy about a couple of valets? What does the Bueller connection even do? Is this one of those things where someone is trying to hold on to a copyright or something? It’s totally confusing stuff.
