Agricultural and Food Law and Electoral List Focus Week in Panama

In proclaiming the norm, the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, stressed that it will be in force for 25 years and that it favors local producers and rural families.

During the opening of the LXII. At the Tourism and Agricultural Fair of San Sebastián de Ocú in the western province of Herrera, the President stressed that the decree was the first of its kind in the country and region and had previously been widely discussed and approved by the National Assembly (Parliament).

For years, the law was strongly requested by producers from various guilds affected by the import policies of successive administrations.

The President pointed out that among the errors corrected by the current legislation, the privilege granted to imports stands out.

The regulation has four axes that aim to create the conditions for the technological transformation of agriculture and the confirmation of its role as the engine of the economic and social development of the Central American country.

It also establishes guidelines based on productivity, competitiveness, food sovereignty and legal certainty with an inclusive, territorial and sustainable approach aimed at creating jobs and boosting the rural economy.

In the last seven days, the Electoral Tribunal (TE) published the official numbers of voters who will exercise their right in the May 5, 2024 general election.

Earlier, the isthmus’ top electoral body released partial reports endorsing the registration of 3 million 41 thousand 86 people with the right to vote, data offered after the deadline to change residence, which expired on Jan. 5.

TE Magistrate Eduardo Valdés also pointed out that in five years on the Isthmus voters made some 660,850 residence changes, and the salient provinces are Panama, Panama West, Chiriquí, Veraguas and the Ngäbe-Buglé comarca.

Regarding collecting signatures in support of pre-candidates for a free application, he pointed out that there are already more than a million signatures in support of these applicants, a process that will last until July 31 this year.

The 20th edition of the Panama Jazz Festival also took place during the week with more than 100 events and the majority participation of women and young musicians who exchanged concerts, conferences and master classes with prominent representatives of the genre, as explained by its founder and main promoter, the Pianist Danilo Perez.
