According to the American broadcaster “ABC”, the watch is distinguished by the presence of the initials “AH” and a swastika. The person who bought the accessory was not disclosed.

An open letter signed by more than 30 Jewish leaders called the auction “abhorrent.” In addition, all participants in the demonstration asked not to sell the item.

For its part, the US auction house told German media that its aim was only to preserve history and that several previously sold items were kept in private collections or donated to Holocaust museums.

According to an estimate by Alexander Historical Auctions, the watch was given to Hitler as a birthday present in 1933, the year of his appointment as Reich Chancellor. The accessory is said to have been taken as a souvenir when French soldiers marched into the Berghof, the Nazi leader’s former refuge on the Obersalzberg.

The auction house assumes that the watch was resold some time later and has been passed down through several generations to this day. .
