Actor Julian Sands disappears while hiking a mountain in California

British actor Julian Sands, 65, is one of two hikers missing in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California, United States. The interpreter, who became popular after his roles in A Room with a View (1985) and Warlock (1989), has been wanted by authorities and a rescue team since Friday the 13th, when his wife reported him missing, according to the sheriff’s statement of San Bernardino County, collected from local media.

“Around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13, a hiker was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area,” Nathan Campos, sheriff’s department corporal, told People magazine. “As far as I know, he went for a walk sometime that day and when he didn’t return, his family reported him missing,” Gloria Huerta, a police department spokeswoman, told AP.

“A search team was dispatched but due to weather conditions they withdrew on Saturday. There will be helicopters and drones to continue the search as time permits,” Campos added. It is hoped that the rescue teams can resume their work once weather and safety conditions improve.

The actor’s passion for the mountains and nature is well known. Julian Sands has said his happiest moment is whenever he’s near the top of a mountain “on a gloriously cold morning,” as he explained in a 2020 interview with British newspaper The Guardian who has a passion for mountaineering led him into situations where he feared for his life. “In the early 1990s, in the Andes, when we and three others were caught in a violent storm at over 6,000 m,” he recalls. “We were all very bad. Some people near us have died; we were very lucky,” the interpreter then said.

While the English actor, father of three and for years has lived in Los Angeles with his wife, American writer Evgenia Citkowitz, authorities are also separately searching for a Hathorne resident named Bob Gregory in the Crystal Lake area, also in the San Gabriel Mountains, reported the American television ABCNews.

While the searches continue, authorities through the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s official Facebook page have asked all hikers — even the most experienced ones — to avoid walking and hiking in the Mount Baldy area because of the high risk of accidents.
