The environmental activist Greta Thunberg, 20, was arrested by the police on Tuesday (17 January) during a protest in a village near a colliery in Garzweiler 2, about 9 kilometers from the town of Lützerath.
Protests have been taking place since the weekend to stop the expansion of openpit coal mining in the region, which would destroy several villages and also undermine Germany’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The video circulating on social media shows the moment when Greta is arrested by the police. She protested alongside a group of protesters near the mine’s entrance.

The mine expansion plan has been heavily criticized by activists because it envisages the removal of a section in the Rhine catchment area between Düsseldorf and Cologne. The lignite mine attacked by the protests is operated by the German energy company RWE.
“Lützerath’s coal must stay in the ground,” Greta announced last Saturday (14) in front of demonstrators and called for the climate not to be sacrificed at the expense of “shortterm growth and corporate greed”. On the day of the speech, protesters clashed with the police while dismantling the camp they were in.
The executive branch of West Germany says the mine expansion is necessary to ensure the country’s energy security and to compensate for the disruption to Russia’s gas supply, a reason protesters reject given that current lignite reserves are sufficient.
