The unemployment rate in Quebec is rising

A rise in the number of unemployed amidst a labor shortage

While Quebec still has 252,000 vacancies, unemployment continues to climb 7.4% as available candidates are often far from what employers are looking for.

“The mismatch, the mismatch between labor supply and demand, explains the coexistence of labor shortages and large numbers of unemployed,” analyzes Mircea Vultur, labor specialist at the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS).

At Indeed, which has its finger on the pulse of the job market every day with its job exchange, we feel that some offers are not being received.

For example, positions like sous chef at $44,400 per year or store manager at $44,123 per year have trouble finding applicants.

“It’s not that there isn’t interest in these positions, it’s just that there are fewer people available,” summarizes Stepan Arman, Senior Sales Manager, Quebec.

Skills don’t match

Basically, there is a mismatch in terms of professional skills.

“A worker who has lost his job at an electricity company cannot immediately take a job as a cook or a nurse [secteurs en pénurie] ; and a position as a waiter in a restaurant does not suit him. The inadequacy also affects the level of education,” explains Ms. Vultur.

“We see a parallel increase in the unemployment rate, although there are vacancies,” agrees Diane-Gabrielle Tremblay, University Professor (TELUQ) of Human Resource Management, Economics and Sociology of Work.

“Especially when these jobs are unattractive,” she adds.

“Since the jobs these companies offer are not always of good quality, young people turn to better-paying fields or continue their studies, which perpetuates the shortage,” concludes Mircea Vultur.
