A meteorite has triggered an alarm on Gran Canaria. Hundreds of people reported around 3:39 p.m. (local time) a “strong explosion” and “tremors” blocked the 1-1-2 headquarters.
A meteorite has triggered an alarm on Gran Canaria this Wednesday afternoon. According to official sources, it crossed the sky La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, the south of Tenerife and after flying over the sky over Gran Canaria landed in the sea on the north coast between the municipalities of Arucas and Guía.
The loud noise generated by the trajectory of the meteorite has alarmed the population in different parts of the island, especially in the Santa Brígida area, where the population thought it was a landslide.
The sound made by the fireball was recorded at 3:36 p.m. by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) seismic station in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. IGN seismologist Itahiza Dominguez ruled out that it was an earthquake because the station had not recorded any waves that would return the signal of seismic movement, only sound.
