A man was found alive and well after being cremated

A 36-year-old man, who was pronounced dead this summer, caused surprise in India after authorities tracked him down on Tuesday.

According to the newspaper, Deepak Balakrishnan Kandi disappeared on June 7 Indian times. On July 17, police found a body. They determined it was Kandi.

The man’s family cremated the remains at a funeral service. It wasn’t until days later that authorities realized they had misidentified the person. DNA tests confirmed law enforcement’s suspicions.

After months of searching, police uncovered an Aadhaar number during a series of searches of hotels in the area. This national identification system, which allowed each person to be identified with a 12-digit code, made it possible to find Kandi.

The man was arrested at a hotel shortly after this discovery. During his “death,” Kandi reportedly traveled across the country, jumping from one odd job to another to survive.
