A $6.5 million investment to improve cellular coverage

The Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has given the green light to two TELUS projects totaling US$6.5 million.

This is good news for many citizens and motorists in eastern Quebec, as cellular coverage has increased over a distance of 35 km on Route 132, and over 60 km for roads 195 and 299 in the Bas-St-Laurent and Gaspesie.

The prefect of the MRC de la Haute-Gaspésie is pleased with this news after having requested this service for several years in the sector. “It’s a long process. We’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a start and I’m counting on the different levels of government to implement the project. I think 2022 is the least,” declared Guy Bernatchez .

Several municipalities are particularly pleased about this news for security reasons.

“I got into an accident on Route 132, where there is no service. It was very difficult to call for help. It will have taken an hour for them to arrive. I found it painful,” said Matapédia Mayor Nicole Lagacé.

In the spring, Telus announced $9 billion in investments to expand 5G technology and PureFibre to 157 communities in Quebec by 2024.
