1 dead, multiple injuries after bus overturns on NJ Turnpike

One person was dead after a bus en route from New York to Philadelphia overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge Tuesday night, officials said.

According to the New Jersey State Police, several people were injured in the accident on the entrance ramp of the Turnpike’s Thomas Edison Service Area from the outside lane. The bus overturned just before 7 p.m. It was unclear how many people were injured and how severe the injuries were.

“There are multiple injuries with one confirmed fatality,” State Police Trooper Brandi Slota said. “The outer lane and the rest area ramp are closed for investigation.”

According to company spokesman Dan Rodriguez, the overturned bus was a megabus traveling from New York to Philadelphia. There were 19 passengers and one driver on the bus.

“We have dispatched personnel to the area to assess the situation,” the spokesman said around 9 p.m

Video on social media showed a state police medical helicopter along with numerous emergency vehicles near the crash site.

Firefighters from Port Reading, Fords, Woodbridge and Perth Amboy, among others, were on the scene, according to the Woodbridge Township Professional Firefighters Association.
